An Austinite's Quest to Find the Best Hoppy Beer in Austin
Vulcan
Stats:
Brewery: Black Star Co-op
IBU: 64.7
ABV: 6.6%
Hops: Chinook, Cascade, Falconer's Flight
Color: Clear amber/gold
Appearance - 8
The beer pours a beautiful amber/gold and is perfectly clear. The head didn't last very long, but was bright white with loose, large bubbles.
Aroma - 8
Dank, dank, and more dank...with a hint of citrus tucked away down there. The aromas actually reminded me a lot of Independence Stash IPA.
Hop Usage - 9
I love Falconer's Flight...that is all.
Overall Flavor - 18
Even though the aroma is dank, the flavors are crisp and inviting with notes of citrus and bread. The rye used gives the beer a nice clean and dry finish while the bitterness lingers at the end without being too overwhelming. The Vulcan wasn't as full bodied as I'd like, but that actually lent to its easy drinking. Well done Black Star Co-op!

The foundation hop is Chinook. Built on top of that is a generous dosing of cascade to brighten up the chinook. Finally, both hops are pulled together with the characteristic citrusy, tropical fruity, Falconer's Flight.
