So far so good with the June State Beer Challenge. Saturday was another great day for showcasing Austin-area breweries, as the Hops & Grain Brewery and MisoHungry hosted the 3rd annual Cupcake Smackdown. Yes, a cupcake smackdown. Upon entrance to the event, people dressed as the pigs from Angry Birds were getting cupcakes launched at them (mainly by little kids). A lot of people showed up for cupcakes, food, and of course beer. Breweries in attendance were (512) Brewing, Austin Beerworks, Independence Brewing, Live Oak, Ranger Creek, Real Ale, and Thirsty Planet.
Ranger Creek had their Cabernet Barrel Mesquite Smoked Porter. I got it RIGHT as the keg went dry, so I at least got to try it. I thought it was absolutely delicious. You could really taste the wine flavor, which subdued the smoky flavor you get with their regular version. Well done.

Live Oak brought their Roggenbier, a medieval style beer brewed with rye. It was good, but not great. The rye gave it a nice mouth feel, almost creamy. However, the flavor was a little one-note, with a little bitterness at the end. Maybe roggenbier isn't my ideal style.

I finished the event off with Austin Beerworks Fire Eagle IPA. It was quite delicious. I only had their beer straight from the fermentation tank so it was nice to have their finished product. It was hoppy, clean, and smooth.
Check out more pictures below of the event.
